EUGENE BRAUNWALD M.D., M.D. (hon), Sc.D. (hon), F.R.C.P.
EUGENE BRAUNWALD, M.D. is the Distinguished Hersey Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Chairman of the TIMI Study Group at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Dr. Braunwald received his medical training at New York University and completed his Medical Residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 1955 he became a Clinical Associate in the (then) National Heart Institute. Subsequently, he served as the first Chief of the Cardiology Branch and then as Clinical Director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. After he left the intramural program, Dr. Braunwald served as the founding Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego and from 1972 to 1996 he was Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He was a founding trustee and Chief Academic Officer of Partners HealthCare System, which incorporates the Brigham and Women's and Massachusetts General Hospitals.

Dr. Braunwald is the only cardiologist who is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He has served as President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of Professors of Medicine. He has received numerous honors and awards including the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American College of Cardiology, Research Achievement, and Herrick Awards of the American Heart Association, the Williams Award of the Association of Professors of Medicine, and the Kober medal of the Association of American Physicians. He is the recipient of thirteen honorary degrees from distinguished universities throughout the world. Harvard University created the Eugene Braunwald Professorship in Medicine as a permanently endowed chair. The American Heart Association created the Eugene Braunwald Academic Mentorship Award as a permanent annual award. The living Nobel Prize winners in medicine voted Dr. Braunwald as "the person who has contributed the most to cardiology in recent years". In 1998 Science Watch listed Dr. Braunwald as the most frequently cited author in Cardiology. The Brigham and Women's Hospital dedicated a research facility as the "Eugene Braunwald Research Center".

Dr. Braunwald is the author of more than 1200 publications and an editor of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, (Editor-in-Chief of the 11th Edition and the current 15th Edition) and the founding editor/author of Heart Disease, now in its 6th Edition. These two books are the leading texts in internal medicine and cardiology respectively. Dr. Braunwald has been Chairman of the TIMI trials since 1984 and he has led the SAVE and CARE trials.



DOUGLAS P. ZIPES M.D.
Dr. Zipes received his B.A. cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1961, his M.D. cum laude from Harvard Medical School in 1964 and his postgraduate training at Duke University Medical Center from 1964 to 1968. He joined Indiana University School of Medicine in 1970 and became full Professor of Medicine in 1976, Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, in 1994, and Director of the Cardiology Division and Krannert Institute of Cardiology in 1995.

He is a past member of the National Board of Directors of the American Heart Association and is past president of the Indianapolis Opera, the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, the Association of University Cardiologists, the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology, the American College of Cardiology and is founding director of the Indiana Cardiac Electrophysiology Society. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.

He is past chairman of the subspecialty board on Cardiovascular Disease and past chairman of Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Test Writing Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is founder and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology. He is Consulting Editor for Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, and Associate Editor of the American Journal of Physiology. He has published over 700 articles and 14 books, and is a co-editor of the 3rd edition of Cardiac Electrophysiology, From Cell to Bedside, and of the 6th edition of Heart Disease, A Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine.

He has received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Heart Association (1989), the Distinguished Scientist Award from the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (1995), the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American College of Cardiology (1996), the Herrick Award from the American Heart Association (1997), and Master of the American College of Cardiology (2002).

His trainees have won first place in young investigator award competitions on four occasions and second or third place four times. In 2001, he received the "Sagamore of the Wabash" from the Governor of Indiana, Frank O'Bannon, which is the highest honor bestowed upon a citizen of Indiana by the Governor. He is the Immediate Past Chair (2002-2003) of the American Board of Internal Medicine.




PETER LIBBY M.D.

Peter Libby, M.D., is the Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He also serves as the Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He directs the D.W. Reynolds Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center at Harvard. Dr. Libby's current major research focus is the role of inflammation in vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his research accomplishments. His areas of clinical expertise include general and preventive cardiology.

An extensive author and lecturer on cardiovascular medicine and atherosclerosis, Dr. Libby has published extensively in medical journals including Circulation, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Nature. He is an editor of Braunwald's Heart Disease. Dr. Libby also contributes the chapters on the pathogenesis, treatment, and prevention of atherosclerosis to Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. He has held numerous Visiting Professorships and has been selected to deliver over 40 named or keynote Lectures throughout the world.

Dr. Libby is a member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He has served in many roles as a volunteer for the American Heart Association, including Chairmanship of several research committees and membership in the Executive Committees of the Councils on Arteriosclerosis, Circulation, and Basic Science. He has also served as a frequent consultant to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and has recently completed a five-year term on the Board of Scientific Councilors. He is the recipient of a MERIT Award from the Institute.

Dr. Libby earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Diego and completed his training in internal medicine and cardiology at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (currently Brigham and Women's Hospital). He also holds an honorary Master of Arts Degree from Harvard University.



Robert O. Bonow MD
Dr. Robert O. Bonow is the Goldberg Distinguished Professor of Cardiology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He received his MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Before joining Northwestern in 1992, Dr. Bonow was Chief of the Nuclear Cardiology Section and Deputy Chief of the Cardiology Branch at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Dr. Bonow is recognized for his research and teaching in a variety of cardiac diseases, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, and heart failure. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 published papers. He serves on the editorial boards of 11 medical journals.

Dr. Bonow is immediate past-President of the American Heart Association (2002-2003). He has served on the Association's Board of Directors since 1999. He chaired the American Heart Association's Committee on Scientific Sessions Program (1998 to 2000), Council on Clinical Cardiology (1999-2001), and Clinical Science Committee (2001-2002). He also serves on the Board of Extramural Advisors of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the Clinical Research Roundtable of the Institute of Medicine. He is a past member of the Subspecialty Board on Cardiovascular Disease of the American Board of Internal Medicine and past member of the Board of Trustees of the American College of Cardiology.

Among his honors are the NIH Director's Award, the U.S. Public Health Service Commendation Medal and Outstanding Service Medal, and elected membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is the recipient of the 2000 Distinguished Fellowship Award of the American College of Cardiology and the 2003 National Leadership Award of the American Heart Association. He has been listed in Who's Who in America, the Best Doctors in America, "The Top Cardiologists" by Chicago Magazine, and the "Country's Best Doctors" by Good Housekeeping.
